Horsin’ Around 021: dOP
25.11.15
‘Everything is about charisma.. If you look at me – you will love me’.
Extravagant, outrageous and a bearly-under-control live set have awarded dOP top 10 spots in the ‘Best live act’ 3 years running. While they may be taking the piss out of playing as well as having a heap of fun, they’re tunes are dead serious. Breaking the current (and very stern) trend of removing all lyrics from music, dOP do the opposite. They thrive in vocal-tinged tech house, jazzy deep house and wonky minimal.
Packing a micro studio live set up normally comprised of a Midas Venice, Moog Voyager, Korg MS and a microphone the base of their music is structured. But the way they play is always improvised. “It’s like playing jazz—you know the song, but you can do a lot of things within it. The base is there to create new things on top of it. Whatever happens, happens.” dOP take the rulebook of what the benchmark of what a live set and club music should be, sweat all over it and take off their shirts after. They also literally have their own rule book too:
“The rules are: Never be on stage sober; never go into a club if you don’t play; never travel with low costs….and also never play with low costs; never play techno without speakers; and always play the keyboard standing up.” It’s more of a theater show more then anything else!
Originally coming together in a French bromance, Damien Vandesande, Clément Aichelbaum and Jonathan Illel had their first release on Minormodern Records, ‘No Passport‘ in 2007.
Over the next 3 years, the trio surmounted a catalogue of no less then 20 releases across Dirt Crew Recordings, Watergate Records and their very own label, Circus Company before a ‘Greatest Hits‘ album. It may have taken others a 10 year span of releases to reach this point, dOP have done so without a huge
And the daunting ‘Happy Meal’ track. Musically, it sounds like something adapted for a movie but it’s pretty hard not to be taken back by the cannibalistic lyrics and a ghoulishly burlesque aspect.
Continuing to churn out releases over the next few years with a touch of sleazy French steeze, their live show caught the eye of Boiler Room. Hosting the famed swimming pools’ changing room, dOP introduced the world to their 4th staple member of the group – Belvedere Vodka. Yes they make the rules and stick them too!
Having previously piloted The Abercrombie terrace in a manic and sweaty funkadelec frenzy, driven by bottles of Russian courage, amongst a cloud of B&H Smooth cigarette smoke, we can say it was easily the wildest set we’ve seen!

dOP will be doing similar damage this time around to the Terrace at The Greenwood on Sunday the 6th of December. There’s a million good reasons why they have been voted one of the best live acts and at very least 1 good reason see why!

Horsin’ Around 020: Oxia
19.11.15In a world flooded with carbon copy ‘tech-house’ productions the mission of filtering through the fakers and taste makers is no mean feat. Oxia has been setting the standard of contemporary club music for all of 2 decades by providing an accessible balance between the roots of house and lashings of techno fundamentals, all delivered in a neat little swing package. From signings at numerous labels, countless releases, his own labels, several passports crammed with countries’ stamps and cementing himself as an artist. Oxia has evolved, survived and continues to influence the sound on a global scale.
Now listening to the French mans sound, it’s quite clear to hear his original influences of where it all began. Citing disco and funk as his first love, at the age of 15 began beatmatching records alongside Stephane Deschezeaux for their local funk radio station. Between these two, this is where the musical journey began.
In 1991, the two the collection of electronic musical equipment as a live act in a union known as ‘Oxia’ housed the French city of Grenoble. At the time, this was France’s electronic-tuned city. Olivier and Stephane went on to birth labels ‘Ozone Records’ alongside Kiko and ‘Goodlife‘ with The Hacker and Alexandre Reynaud. After having had several releases on the labels, a pivotal point occurred – as good friends, Stephane parted leaving Olivier to pilot Oxia under solo direction.
The first album in 2004 ’24 HEURES’ on Goodlife showcased 12 tracks, ranging from ambient under 100bpm scuzzed out electronica tracks to the sound that has now settled into. The album flows as a progression of a 24 hour period – opening with ‘Premiere Heure’, a dark synth heavy soundscape setting the tone of the rest of the listening experience flowing seamlessly into the next track. From here, the album mianders through disjointed beats, analogue sounds, lashings of 90’s inspirations and techno beats to the ‘peak time’ 136bpm track – ‘Flashback’ (aptly – the 6th track). From here he dives back down in energy again before the final three tracks kick you in the teeth once more.
Honorable mention must go to ‘Intuition’
It clearly illustrated Olivier’s indebtedness to the hypnotic techno rhythms of Jeff Mills, UR and the deep electro dynamics.
2 years down the track it was the groundbreaking ‘Domino’ on the second to none label ‘Kompakt’ that proved to be his seminal record.
The oscillating melodic tones, a skippy high end and a driving insistence give Oxia the competitive edge creating a timeless club classic.
Continuing from one stand out label to the next ‘Whole Life’ sprung in 2009 on Gorge and Nick Curly’s 8Bit Label. It was a killer in the underground house scene gaining the second spot ‘best tech-house production’ in the Beatport Music Awards and most charted track of that year in Resident Advisor DJ Chart.
All this hard work didn’t go unnoticed and In 2008 Oxia scored second & third spot in the Beatport Music Awards ‘Best Remix’ (with his remix of Butch’s track) and Best ‘Techno Artist’.
In 2012 Oxia came back with a new LP ‘Tides Of Mind’ on the French Infiné Music. On this album he works for the first time with guest singers: Miss Kittin, Mesparrow, and Scalde. Oxia decided to put aside the trendy electronic patterns and to move back to more classic but no less enjoyable House Music. Tracks like ‘Flying Over Time’ & ‘Latitude’ giving the warmth of house to the album and honing in on the trademark Oxia groove and shuffle he’s arrived at today.
‘When I made my previous album eight years ago, I listened to a lot of techno music, almost only that at that time. Sometime later I restarted listening to other genres too, such as my old loves soul and funk but also jazz, classical music, folk and artists such as James Blake, Loney Dear, Radiohead and lots of deeper electronic music.’
With this said, the album is not shy of a deep and melodic sound that ventures to the dancefloor with a stamp of the Oxia groove. This is music conducive to daydreaming, smiling, feet-tapping and escapism. Again, the album washes over tastings of different periods of the night with the opening and closing in similar fashion as 24 HEURES’s soundscape tracks.
Peering through Olivier’s soundcloud, unveils days upon days of listening from many of the usual suspects’ podcasts including his ‘Home Selection’s’ podcasts.
‘”Home Selection”, it’s a podcast series dedicated to the music I listen to while being at home… It’s a collection of old and recent while crossing different musical borders though focussed on a chilled out state of mind.’Still very much drawn to the soundscape-y productions in his albums.
By mid 2014, the Frenchman is ready with new work – SAVED releases his “Perception” EP. Once more this release shows how Oxia masters the house and techno crossover. The success of this release doesn’t go unnoticed and a follow up on SAVED earlier this year in January.
Now striking a true generational balance between the roots of house with the foundations of techno and the grooves of funk and disco has landed Oxia to where he is now. Masterful productions with a hefty back-catalog, incredible dj and one of the scene’s marathon runners.

Horsin’ Around 019: Mihai Popoviciu
10.11.15Coming from Sibiu in Romania, is considered one of the most innovative eastern European producers of electronic music today. He was born in Romania in 1981 and was drawn to the fast-growing rave scene of the 90’s. He started producing music in 2001 being influenced by the techno and house virus and it took many years of experiments until he came up with his first vinyl release on DJ Hell’s imprint Gigolo Records in 2005.
Fast forward a decade on – Highgrade Records, Bondage Music, Poker Flat Records and of course, his own label – Cyclic Records. He’s presence as been felt globally and cemented himself as a world class producer.
Mihai digs deepers into the bowels of house and pulles out the sound which really grabs you.. we’ve dug a little deeper with him leading up to this Sunday’s event.
1) What have you been up to since your last visit to Australia?
It’s been a busy summer for me with a lot of gigs across Europe and studio work for my new album that will come out next year.2) How were you introduced to electronic music? How did you become involved in it?
I was a teenager when i discovered the techno and trance rave scene in the mid 90’s. That was my first contact with electronic music. Later on i got into Detroit techno and old school electro and started to produce music.3) If you had to note some musical influences that have helped developed your sound – who would they be?
I think the X-Mix series (http://www.k7.com/x-mix/) had a big impact on me in the late 90’s especially the mixes of Laurent Garnier, DJ Hell, Dave Clarke and Kevin Saunderson.4) Producing or Dj’ing – which do you prefer and why?
I couldn’t choose between the two of them. I love both and I can’t see myself doing only one thing.5) We’re all eagerly awaiting the release of the new album we’ve been hearing about. What can we expect from you this time around?
It’s a club album with 10 tracks that can fit in different times or moods of a party. It will be out next spring on Bondage Music Records, both on vinyl and digital format.6) What can we see from Cyclic in the future?
We’ve just released a Various Artists compilation with 6 tracks of fresh upcoming producers that is very well received and got a lot of good feedback. Next we have Swedish talent Chris Llopis coming out in December. Next year in February Cyclic will be 4 years old and will have a nice anniversary.7) Finally, 3 tunes you have been playing your last few sets.
Dexter Kane – Shades Of Dusk (Highgrade Records)
Deep Spelle – Funk Foot (Cyclic Records)
Mihai Popoviciu – The Swindle (Poker Flat Recordings)
Mihai will be taking the reigns of the S*A*S*H Terrace this Sunday in top honors. Arguably being on the stand out acts of the year so far – we’re busting out our dancing shoes and on our tippie toes to see what’s coming up next for Mihai.

Horsin’ Around 018: Revolver Upstairs
02.10.15Those of you that don’t know the clubbing institution Revolver upstairs, it’s a multi-arts venue in Melbourne’s inner suburb of Prahmam/mad club! The first thing that comes to many people’s mind may be its notorious reputation, this can tend to cloud what is in our eyes the one of best venues in Australia. SASH has hosted three Sundays at Revolver and every time we had an absolute blast! The club’s décor really sets it off, as its not really like a club more of a bar with club energy, the odd lamp shades, funky couches and caged Dj booth makes it perfect for what ever mood your in, be it dancing your pants off or just lounging. Ask any true HAT and they will tell you the energy that Revs hold’s is something very special, you can walk in their at anytime of the weekend (like anytime) and the place is vibing. Musically you can’t flaw it, the tunes are on point and many of their resident such as Mike Callander and Katie Drover are favourites of the SASH crew. We are honoured to have to five of their finest residents take over the mighty terrace, prepare to be Reved at SASH!
Resident James Steeth provides us some insight to what being a resident at Revolver entails.
So what makes being a resident at Revolver so different to any other club?
It’s definitely a combination of things for me, the artwork, the couches, things like old airplane rides and the cage itself but most importantly the music.Obviously its opening hours over the weekend is probably the longest out of many clubs in Australia? When’s your favorite time to play and why?
Anytime you play there is special I think, the Thursday nights especially around 2am I think are incredible but also playing on a Sunday during the day, there is something real crook about playing in doors during the day time, but I guess that’s what makes it so cool. What do you think makes revs so special?
I think the way Revolver kind of has is its own sound and the people that sound attracts, is definitely what makes it so special. Everyone there wants to have fun, you have such an awesome variety of people and an awesome variety of music. What do you think is the most important aspect of being a resident DJ?
If you can have a connection with the crowd and are able to understand what to play and when to play then you’re doing well. I think putting the hours in and finding new tunes and ones that might not be particularly obvious I think is what makes better DJ’s. Spacey Space and Mike Callander are two dudes at Revolver who do this very well. What’s a secret gem of a track you’ve been playing lately?
What’s an outstanding session at revs you can recall and who was it?
One that stems to mind I guess would be when I was 18 and I convinced an old friend from primary school to come with me for a coffee after I was feeling a bit fruity. T-Rek, Spacey and Boogs were all playing. We laughed, we cried and we both left saying it was the best night of our lives.Last of all what was the weirdest thing you’ve seen at revs?
There’s been plenty of people take of their clothes, which I think is great.

Rev’s Soundcloud
Rev’s FacebookFor this long weekend – we’ll be handing over the reigns of our beloved Terrace to the masters of all-hours-of-the-night Rev’s Residents; Boogs, T-Rek, Henry Who and James Steeth.

Horsin’ Around 016: Vera
03.09.15S*A*S*H has teamed up with OI Global to bring one of Germany’s leading ladies of house and techno – Vera.
With label signings to brands heavy enrooted in the ‘quality-not-quantity’ ethos the likes of Perlon, Hello? Repeat, Half Baked Records and Moon Harbour all in the mix, Vera’s approach is clear. Vinyl based timeless music selections by following her intuition rather then trends. For her, it’s all about the story a dj is telling and the ambiance being created, not about genres or playing one big tune after another.
Having recently played host to another influential Israeli lady based in Germany – Maayan Nidam – the two pair together under the powerhouse banner of ‘Mara Trax’. The two have combined skills and mutual love and for each other as well as music
While Vera remains very much an insider’s tip to many – her influence is widely felt. Focused heavily on touring her love of sharing music is obvious. Not concerned of what’s ‘in vogue’ or glued by genres – Vera’s sound delves somewhere in the blurred lines of electronica.
Rooted in rhythm and bass without pretentiousness or a cheesy sell, rather focused on creation of ambience and feeling. It’s difficult to know what to expect other then a bag of wax selected with a different host of sounds – moods – grooves and energies..
This will be her first tour of Australia and one we’re very grateful to have her play the glass terrace this Sunday!

S.A.S.h by Day & S.A.S.H by Night
25.08.15

★★ PLEASE READ S.A.S.HE.R.S – SUPER IMPORTANT ★★
We’ve decided to change the ball game, keeping the night time goodness we have at HOME & re-instilling the day time vibes we miss from Abers… now that’s exciting!
S.A.S.H presents two parties over each & every Sunday.
We present to you, S.A.S.H BY DAY & S.A.S.H BY NIGHT.When looking for a daytime venue we hunted high & low, but we soon realised there was a gem just under our noses. This venue once reigned in this city a long time ago as “THE” Sunday venue which hosted the institution that was Sounds On Sunday…. The Greenwood Hotel
★ S.A.S.H BY DAY at Greenwood Hotel ★
★1pm-9pm/$15 entry ★
**This bit below is IMPORTANT so please read it in full**We obviously bypassed this venue at the beginning of our search, but then realised why we did & why so many people (including ourselves) were “over” the Greenwood.
There were some key elements that we felt had to be addressed for S.A.S.H by Day at Greenwood to accomplish bringing back the Sunday daytime S.A.S.H vibes we all miss.
We’ve worked with Greenwood & have made the following permanent changes to the venue for Sundays moving forward…. These are –
★ Cheap ticket price ★
A $15 ticket price, no the usual $40/$50/$60 ticket price that typical Greenwood events entail.★ Drink prices ★
Greenwood have agreed that drink prices will stay as their usual during the week prices, they will not inflate them.
$7 beers/$8.50 vodkas + a 2hr happy hour from 1pm-3pm consisting of $5 beers/vodkas.★ Proper sound ★
A fully fledged Funktion 1 Sound system, almost 3 times the size of the current one at HOME terrace – HUGE!★ Venue layout ★
We’ve organised a completely different setup to the “usual” layout that happens, it’s much more comfy & includes loads of lazy Sunday lounges.★ Food ★
There will be an awesome NEW menu available all day long, comprising of shared plates, pizzas & burgers…. The perfect hangover cure or stomach liner, whichever position you find yourself in!★ S.A.S.H BY NIGHT at HOME ★
★ 8pm-4am/$15 till 10pm/$20 after/$15 with S.A.S.H By Day Stamp all night ★For the last year we’ve called HOME, well home, & for good reason too… it’s awesome.
We won’t be changing too much about our night time routine, more so fine tuning it.
S.A.S.H BY NIGHT will now open a little later at 8pm still serving up the night owls weekly dose of S.A.S.H.
★ The Box ★
The BOX will be relocating to it’s original postion, half way down the stairs where we know the sweat will be dripping off the roof in no time.★ The Maze ★
We’ll be opening up a NEW room, called the MAZE. This room will be offering a dedicated chillout zone with funk/soul/disco & chilled beats + an extra smoking balcony for those that enjoy the odd puff.Besides that things will be running just as they were before at HOME & keep in mind the next Long Weekend Entire HOME Takeover party is just around the corner.
The future is bright, Sundays are ace & everyone just got an extra 8hrs of daytime S.A.S.H on a weekly basis – now that’s a good day.
Join us in the day or join us in the night… or do both & get that doctors certificate ready – you’ll need it.
Full info for the Opening Day can be found on our website or on the FB event.
